OSLO, NORWAY– Amidst mounting speculation of an all-out bidding war between Microsoft, Google and the Korean bakery down on 3rd, Opera Software announced today that it inadvertently purchased itself in a $0 million recursive merger set to complete on Monday.

“I’m as surprised as everyone else,” said Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner. “I read the news on http://www.geocities.com/~MiltonsTechWorld192/index.html when I woke up this morning.”

“Buying Opera is very Web 2.0,” said Milton, who was studying for a social studies test and could only comment briefly. “It’s like tagging. More companies should try it.”

Analysts value the deal at 42 liters of hot air, the estimated net worth of the blogosphere’s journalistic abilities.

  3. F. Landers Koelfantez Says:

Hm, now that Opera has bought out Opera, I wonder if there will be layoffs due to managerial redundancy/duplication.

Actually I feel sorry that the Korean bakery down on 3rd lost out — their stock price is going to plummett.

The Geocities link doesn’t work. Must have had too much traffic because of its quality content.

  12. gerry Says:

That’s nothing. Netscape and Yahoo are merging, and basing their operations in Israel. They’ll be known as Net ‘n’ Yahoo.

Good for Opera. Maybe we’ll see some good new software out of this. Web 2.1 intergration? :)

  18. Mike Says:

It’s interesting to see that even Opera doesn’t want to spend money to purchase Opera. If they’re not gonna spend the cash, why should anyone else?

  19. Bob Monsour Says:

What I had heard was that Opera bought arepO in a “reverse” merger ;-)

    Nice :)

It has been a busy few weeks preparing to move to Redmond, Mountain View, Tokyo, and the back room of the place on third. I was particularly upset that they missed out - much as I already like the lunch, kimchi would be a good addition, and I miss Chang’s Bulgogi (He used to cook it about once a week, and it made good party food).

To find that I have to change my business cards, move house, and then worry about my job in the new masterplan, only to end up in the same place in Oslo was…

    … well …

… quite nice really. Happy Christmas from Bangk^H^H^H^H^HGreno^H^H^H^H^HMosc^H^H^H^H^H Oslo.

  28. Sensemann Says:

    LMAO. Great! :)

  29. Netanel Jacobsson Says:

Great story Blake! It seems like Opera has taken the lead in self-generated aquisitions ;)

  30. John Says:

I wish that Firefox would become as good as Opera is already (no LOL). Merger?

  31. Terry Says:

John, FF 1.5 already IS. Much more secure as well.

  32. Deluxe Says:

Yeah that Korean Bakery is a force. Have you ever seen that woman get mad?! I ain’t buyin’ no chocolate babka from her today.

  33. Kjetil Says:

Bob: Arepo allready owns 18% of the stock in Opera!

  34. Jim Says:

Terry, no, its not. Opera has a better more customisable interface, uses less memory (and the difference only gets better as the amount of tabs you have open increase). Its highly secure, supports as many or more standards than Firefox does, and is completely free as well.

  35. Greg Says:

    Excellent and very funny too.

    Whats next Opera buys AOL?

  36. LX Says:

Terry, FF ISN’T. On both accounts.

  37. Billy Says:

    Funny

But Opera kicks the crap out of Firefox, so I guess Opera gets the last laugh.

  38. kbrooks Says:

    LOL!

  39. tom Says:

    What is the Korean bakery?
    What does it mean?

  40. XoticStar Says:

    Opera Rules!!!

  41. nouhad Says:

    HAHAHAHHA this is just hilarious

  42. Alexey Feldgendler Says:

When I first read about “Microsoft buying Opera”, I’ve written in my blog that, according to the fresh hot rumours, Microsoft and Google are each planning on purchasing the other, so it’s possible that the owners of Google and Microsoft exchange their companies in the end.

  43. Ryan Says:

Nice. Great article Blake. FF detractors seem to think their almighty browser is 100% scalable. Lets see what happens when (if) Opera ever ACTUALLY finds a marketshare. Opera isn’t lighter, its under-developed. (A sample of 4 mil hits on my site- Opera:

  44. Ryan Says:

    addendum to 45:
sample of 4 mill hits shows:
    Opera at less than(<) 0.1%
    FF+Moz at more than(>) 12%
